Gothic/Renaissance 14th Century Music: "Trotto"

Renaissance Quote

“How can anyone be silly enough to think himself better than other people, because his clothes are made of finer woolen thread than theirs. After all, those fine clothes were once worn by a sheep, and they never turned it into anything better than a sheep.”
― Thomas More, Utopia

"The Sword and the Dragon" (1960) is the rarely-seen Americanized version of the Russian film "Ilya Murometz" (1956) released by Valiant Pictures and presented by Joseph Harris and Sig Shore. The Russian original, was directed by famed fantasy film maker and animator, Aleksandr Ptushko, and was derived from Russian folklore. It was reportedly the first Russian film made in Cinemascope and 4-channel stereo sound. The Americanized version was released to television in a pan and scan, mono-only version which nonetheless is fondly remembered by American baby boomers who saw it oft-repeated on "Million Dollar Movie" in the Sixties.  Voice-over actors in the American-version include Marvin Miller and/or Paul Frees (sources differ) and narration is by well-known news anchor, Mike Wallace. Goldshield Castle Recommended Medieval Feature Film

"A Knight’s Tale" This movie, starring the late Heath Ledger, is unique among medieval movies. The story is set to music, rock music, that makes for a good time for the audience. Ledger plays a peasant with a burning desire to become a knight, or at least to survive.

"Kingdom of Heaven" This epic drama that takes you from the crusades of the east to the hard life of medieval Europe. This Ridley Scott film stars Liam Neeson (Sir Godfrey) and Orlando Bloom as a blacksmith who becomes a crusader. Rarely are medieval films shot with the skill of these graphic battle scenes and sweeping views.

"First Knight" How could this be anything be one of the best medieval movies with a cast like Sean Connery as King Arthur, Richard Gere as Lancelot and Julia Ormond as Guinevere? Of course, as in any of the medieval movies about Camelot, Lancelot falls in love with Guinevere while King Arthur battles a violent adversary.

"Excalibur" This is one of the most ambitious medieval movies made about King Arthur and the times he lived in. The action is nonstop. The beautiful photography and brass-brassiered Helen Mirrin make this a film worth seeing.

"Ever After" Drew Barrymore is an enchanting, feisty Cinderella in this fairy tale film. Anjelica Huston is the perfect wicked step mother. Much closer to the original Brothers Grimm fable it is still a story between a common girl and a prince in the end. This Cinderella sports a pretty progressive attitude than other women in medieval films.

Goldshield Castle Employee Costumes

Employees hired to work at the Goldshield Castle's various events would be required to wear an authentic-looking costume similar to those shown here, much like Cast Members are asked to dress appropriately at Disneyland. Costumes would be designed under the guidance of Costume Consultant, Ms. Laurie Norris, an over-thrity-year premiere wardrobe manager/stylist/dresser for countless Disney Corporation venues such as the Main Street Parades, TV commercials, live stage presentations and more. Such costumes could also be worn for multi-media productions, rental for Halloween costumes, and for resale.

Goldshield Castle Winery Ad

Goldshield Castle Creative Director, Brother Andy, has envisioned an advertising campagne for the winery and castle project which features iconic Renaissance fine art with a modern, fun twist. The above image is a take on artist Caravaggio's painting of a young man offering a glass of wine to the viewer. The "subtext" meaning of the artist's intent is unmistakable.

Valley Center Facts

Valley Center, California?  Here are a few interesting facts provided by the US Census of 2010 and wikipedia...

The full name is "Valley Center Census Designated Area". The ninety-four square miles of unincorporated Valley Center has a population of about 10,000. Seventy-three percent are Caucasian with an age average of 45 - 65. Seventy percent are Catholic.   Fifteen percent are gay.  Eighty-seven percent people who live in Valley Center have a higher than High School education. Unemployment is at an all-time low, with over twenty percent of adult males working in construction.  Home sales are up over the rest of the county, state and country averages, with the median home valued at $440,000 (Sate median: $350,000).  This may be because of the low-density regulations set on the area.

Valley Center is the site of the killing of the largest grizzly bear ever recorded.  It was shot in 1866 and weighed 2,200 lbs.

History Of The Renaissance (Documentary)

Welcome To Goldshield Castle

GOLDSHIELD CASTLE

Nestled in the rustic North San Diego mountains, Goldshield Castle is the up-coming, multi-million dollar, life-long dream project of Keith Klundt, 62, a former award-winning agriculture teacher, well-respected building contractor, and successful business entrepreneur.  The authentic-down-to-the-minute-detail Renaissance-style Goldshield Castle project is centered around the castle itself, to be located on an already-purchased highly-visable mountain in Valley Center, California, but will also include a working winery and extensive gardens.  Expectations concerning the building of the castle (to be experienced as a Tuscan village of Southern Italy in 1350 to 1550 A.D.) is that it will take more than two years to complete.  The exclusive, unique venue will serve as a backdrop for private events such as weddings, in-house original plays, various community clubs, a film location, and countless other multi-media educational and entertainment projects. The surrounding vistas at the top of the mountain include a vantage of Catalina Island to the border of Mexico. The weather, according to wikipedia, is that of a "Mediterranean climate". Nearby, within eye-shot, are both Harrah's and Valley View casinos.

Patricia and Randal Holmes of Placentia, California, are partners in the vineyards, which are already planted.  Innovative film-maker and avant guard artist, Brother Andy, 57, has been named as Creative Director, while LA real estate agent and internet expert, Corey Chambers, 49, will act as consultant.

Notable local residents have included the likes of actress Mae West, Glen Bell (of Taco Bell), actor Gary Cooper, actor Steve Reeves and Fred Astaire.

This blog will report up-to-the-minute information concerning this historic venture, as well provide entertainment and educational media about a multitude of related subjects such as classic action-adverture films, book recommendations, and places of interest.  Your participation is welcomed and encouraged!
